Operational Security (OpSec) is a risk management process that provides guidance on how to view operations from the perspective of an adversary in order to protect sensitive information from falling into the wrong hands.

OpSec is a five step process that includes:
  1. Identification of Critical information
  2. Analysis of Threats
  3. Analysis of Vulnerabilities
  4. Assessment of Risk
  5. Application of Appropriate OpSec Measures

Just as Hansel and Gretel left a trail of breadcrumbs behind, we can unintentionally open ourselves (and the organizations we work for) to breaches by exposing data in areas that we perceive as safe. For example, think of the last sensitive conversation you've had at a coffee shop, on a train with a colleague, or on the conference call you took on your apartment balcony... What did you say?
